Also, Kaysen refers to a few incidents where Lisa is put in seclusion and kept away from the other patients for a couple days; â€Å"Seclusion worked. After a day or night in there with nothing to do, most people calmed down† (pg 47). This quote from the novel demonstrates how being in isolation and having some time to your own thoughts can help those with mental illnesses establish more independence. This is because when secluded, you must care for yourself instead of relying on others, which Lisa had to do. The second example that Kaysen refers to in the book is the patients connection with the head nurse Valerie; â€Å"Valerie was strict and inflexible and she was the only staff person we trusted. We trusted her because she wasn’t afraid of us† (pg 83). This quote exemplifies that being in this hospital helped Kaysen and the other girls to form relationships with people other than the patients. The author refers to the trust all the patients have with Valerie, and being in the hospital helped them gain this trust. Kaysen talks about how Valerie is unlike any of the other doctors because she does not treat them like they are crazy; â€Å"Valerie was a relief from that. The only phrase she used was acting out, and she used it correctly, to mean â€Å"getting in my hair and driving me crazy†. She said things like â€Å"cut that out† and â€Å"you’re a bore†. She said what she meant, just as we did† (pg 84). Because of the bond Kaysen and the other patients have formed with Valerie, they have learned to be more social and to experience a relationship with trust and loyalty. The patients were able to gain trust for Valerie because she treats them like normal people, and does not single them out because they are mentally unstable. Finally, the relationship between Kaysen and herself is the final example in the novel. Throughout the novel, the author finds herself arguing a lot with her own thoughts. Kaysen states that â€Å"[m]ental illness [is] a communication problem between interpreters one and two† (pg 139), referring to the two interpreters in her head controlling her thoughts. The writer also states; â€Å"I knew I wasn’t mad and that they wouldn’t keep me there† (pg 42), knowing that she would be able to make it out sometime soon by showing everyone that she was not crazy. Kaysen proves this by explaining to her doctors and therapists her thoughts and emotions. By trying to prove to them she is not crazy, she comes to terms with her problems and realizes she is not mad. Before this, the author says that if you were to act out like this is the hospital you would be put in seclusion, and â€Å"[s]eclusion worked† (pg 47). Being put in seclusion helped the patients because it let them have time to their own thoughts, and to be by themselves. This, intern made the girls do things for themselves, making them want to get out and pursue that. After Kaysen spent this time in the hospital, she was able to face her fears and come to terms with her diagnosis. This in the end, set Kaysen free because she was able to get out and live her life without having to be analyzed. Through the author’s relationships with Lisa, Valerie and herself, Kaysen is able to portray that mental institutions help those who are put in it by letting them gain independence, be more social and set them free. Kaysen states that she â€Å"got better and can’t explain why† (pg 158). Many artists, including the most famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, put their intentions and messages in their works, and many works of Renaissance art had similar styles of drawing and were usually depicted in religious images. The humanities, the significances, and the lives during the time were all shown in the Renaissance art. In European society during the Renaissance, capitalism and money became popular and significant. Even though the people still praised for God, at the time, they praised more for money. Their ultimate goal was gaining more money. Their loving money was also depicted in Renaissance art. Quentin Matsys The Money Lender and His Wife depicts how important the money was. In the drawing, a man who is counting his money and his wife who is reading her Bible are sitting together. However, the wifes focus is only on the money, not on her Bible. The man and his wife are both fascinated and are fully focused on their money. The aspect of their action shows that the money became more interesting than religion. Most of the artists used similar styles and common topics in their religious drawings. They normally drew Jesus at the center, Mary next to Jesus, and the twelve disciples beside him. In those religious drawings, Jesus and Mary were always dressed in red and blue clothes because the colors were only used for important figures. Leonardo da Vincis The Last Supper is a typical religious picture created in the early Renaissance. In his painting, Jesus is sitting at the center of the table. He is also wearing blue and red clothes, and next to him, Mary is also wearing blue and red clothes. The twelve disciples divided into two groups of six are sitting on each of Jesus left and right sides. In this picture, there are also three windows behind Jesus which points out the Trinity. His drawing also has a story in itself. This is the moment of the twelve disciples focusing on Jesus, and Jesus making a statement: One of you shall betray me (John 13:21). It is easily detected that only one guy among the twelve disciples is putting his elbow down on the table, hinting that he is going to betray Jesus. Like da Vincis painting does, every religious painting has its own message or story and the common painting style of Renaissance art. Many other artists also used similar methods and skills that da Vinci used. In Michelangelos The Last Judgment, the God and Mary wearing red and blue clothes are at the center of the painting. This paintings story is about heaven and hell. People sent to the hell in the bottom part of the painting all look distressed and angry. Even the colors and moods used in the upper and bottom part are notably different. In the upper part, people are wearing clothes, and the mood is brighter, but in bottom part, people are not dressed, and the mood is also gloomy.
